Milford Zornes

Milford Zornes (1908-2008)

This leader in the California-style watercolor movement painted with macular degeneration for the last two decades of his life. In an article that appeared in Pomona College Magazine shortly before his death at the age of one hundred, Milford Zornes discusses how difficult it was to find the “courage” to work from scratch when he could no longer see to “do it” the way he wanted to do it. It was hard for him to accept that, because of blindness, he could no longer necessarily be accurate to the appearance of his subject, but rather to the feeling of his subject as he relied on instinct, muscle memory, and scenes from his imagination to paint.
